Breast Surgery
Breast-Enlargement
A congenital underdevelopment of the breast or shrinkage after pregnancy and breast feeding may undermine a woman`s self esteem. Modern, well tolerated silicone implants are a great help in these situations. Through minimal incisions under the breast, areola or axilla the implants are placed under the breast tissue or the muscle to shape the desired harmonic female figure. The patient may be back to her daily routine after a few days. Sports should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks. Occasionally a fibrous capsule forms around the implant months or years afterwards, which may require an operative correction.
Shaping and Tightening of the Breast
A pendulous breast can be tightened and shaped with minimal scars nowadays without impairment of the breast tissue proper or baby feeding. Minor procedures may be even performed under local anaesthesia and sedation as ambulatory treatment. Healing takes about 2 weeks.
Breast-Reduction
Overdeveloped and heavy breasts lead to chronic pain in the neck, shoulder grooves, skin irritation and bad posture. A plastic surgical breast reduction may not only relieve the pain and associated symptoms, but gives a natural and pleasing shape that fits to the rest of the body. As a rule health insurance companies may pay for the treatment, if 500g or more of breast tissue per side must be removed. A written consent by the insurance prior to the operation is mandatory.
Breast feeding, ultrasound and mammographic controls of the reduced and newly shaped breast may be done without problems. In case of generalized overweight of the body weight reduction before the operation is advisable. Hospitalization for 1-2 nights is recommended. The ambulatory postop. treatment takes 2 weeks normally; a special bra must be worn for 4-6 weeks . Normal activities are possible after one week. No sports for 4 weeks.
Correction of buried nipples or abnormal areolas
Buried nipples or abnormal areolas are corrected under local anaesthesia as outpatient treatment.
Gyaecomastia = female type breast in males
Men sometimes develop a female type breasts during puberty or later in life as a consequence of imbalance of sexual hormones. Through an invisible incision in the areola the enlarged breast tissue is removed and any additional fatty tissue is reduced by liposuction. Minor cases may be treated ambulatory under local anaesthesia. Major corrections are performed under general anaesthesia with short time hospitalization.
Over many years I have been engaged in all aspects of plastic surgery of the breast and have developed operative procedures, which have become standard for breast enlargement, reduction and reconstruction of congenital and acquired deformities like cancer and irradiation sequelae.
